Saranda: Lola Martiko

When my father was imprisoned, my mother would say to me, at the height of her sadness, “How I wish some of the women from the village were here to console me!” Lola Martiko, my father’s first cousin, was one of these women; in her mouth was always the sweet word. That she was able to preserve her goodness is amazing when one considers her history. She had just been married, when on one day in 1944, the Germans killed her husband, father and a brother. Her other brother died several months later. She has never remarried.
